Why Is It Better to Go to a Funeral Than a Party?

"It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart." — Ecclesiastes 7:2

Did you know that the Bible says it is better to go to a funeral than a party?

At first, that sounds strange. After all, parties are enjoyable, while funerals are painful and sorrowful. So why would Scripture say such a thing?

When life is going well and everything seems to be falling into place, many of us begin to drift. We become comfortable. We focus on our careers, our possessions, our goals, and our pleasures. We start living as though this life is all there is.

But funerals have a way of reminding us that it isn't.

When someone passes away, we are forced to confront the reality that our lives on earth are temporary. We begin thinking about eternity, God, and what comes after death. Even many atheists report thinking about the afterlife during near-death experiences or moments when they are confronted with their own mortality.

The truth is that we should be thinking about God in every season of life—not only during times of hardship or loss.

God is constantly mindful of us. He knows every word we have spoken, every thought we have entertained, and every sin we have committed. Yet despite knowing us completely, He has never stopped loving us. He has never stopped calling us to Himself.

Because of that, we should put Him first in everything we do.

The reality is that whatever we place above God will eventually perish. Money fades. Careers end. Status disappears. Even the things we cherish most in this life will one day pass away.

Only God is eternal.

Tell me:

Will your money buy you everlasting life?

Will your career save your soul?

Will your family always love you perfectly?

Will your spouse think about you the way the Lord does?

The answer is no.

The only One who loves perfectly and unconditionally is the Lord Jesus Christ.

He does not love you because of your bank account, your achievements, your popularity, or your social status. He loves you because He created you in His image.

Human love often comes with conditions and expectations. God's love does not. God is love.

People will disappoint you. People will fail you. But God will never fail you.

That is why we should think about Him during every season of life—during the celebrations and during the sorrows, during the victories and during the losses.

And if you think about it, heaven is far more fascinating than anything this world has to offer. God is surrounded by angels who praise Him continually, yet He still desires a relationship with you.

The Creator of the universe wants you.

So put your faith in Jesus Christ. Seek Him while you have time. Think about Him today—not because life is difficult, but because He is worthy of your thoughts, your worship, and your love.
