Whose Approval Are You Living For?

Whose Approval Are You Living For?

“They’re watching me.”

“There are too many people.”

“What if I’m not qualified?”

“What if they think I’m dumb?”

Sometimes, we stop ourselves before we even begin. We imagine people laughing, judging, or questioning whether we belong. Before anyone has said a word, we have already allowed their imagined opinions to make our decision for us.

But whose approval are we living for?

You Are Living to Please God

You are not living to please people. You are living to please God.

That does not mean you should be inconsiderate or refuse correction. God calls us to love others, and sometimes He uses people to help us recognize where we need to grow. There is wisdom in listening to someone who cares enough to tell you the truth.

But listening to wise advice is different from allowing the fear of judgment to control your life.

Someone thinking you are awkward does not make you worthless. Someone questioning your ability does not mean you should give up. Someone misunderstanding your intentions does not mean you must spend your life trying to earn their approval.

Galatians 1:10 asks us to consider whether we are seeking the approval of people or of God. Paul makes it clear that pleasing people cannot be the governing purpose of a servant of Christ.

Ask yourself: Am I making this decision because it honors God, or because I am afraid of what someone might think?

Even Jesus Faced Rejection

Jesus was without sin, yet people mocked Him, rejected Him, and crucified Him.

If a perfect man did not receive everyone’s approval, why do we expect to?

You cannot build your life around pleasing a world that rejected Christ. There will always be someone who disagrees with you. You could spend years trying to satisfy everyone and still find someone who thinks you are not enough.

Jesus remained obedient to His Father. His faithfulness did not depend on the crowd’s approval.

Our lives should follow that same direction: toward our Father in Heaven.

Put Your Faith in Him—and Live It Out

Trusting God does not mean you will never feel nervous. You may still feel your heart race when you enter a room. You may stumble over your words. You may need practice, preparation, or help.

You can take a faithful step while feeling afraid.

Apply for the opportunity you have been avoiding. Offer to help someone. Share the message you have been afraid to share. Learn the skill you have convinced yourself you cannot learn.

Feeling unqualified is a reason to prepare and grow. It does not have to become a reason to never begin.

Pray for wisdom. Examine your motives. Then take the next step.

Do not spend your whole life waiting until you feel impressive enough to be seen.

Whose Opinion Are You Giving Authority To?

People are flawed. So are you and I. Our judgments are limited, and we do not always understand one another.

God knows you fully.

Why give the opinions of flawed people more authority over your life than the One who is perfect?

Love people. Receive wise correction. But live to glorify your Father in Heaven.

The next time you think, “What if they think I’m dumb?” ask yourself a better question:

“What would faithfulness to God look like right now?”

Then put your faith in Him—and live it out.
